Mercedes-Benz Warning Lights & Dashboard Indicators

The information below provides general descriptions of common Mercedes-Benz dashboard warning lights found on U.S. models. Warning lights may vary depending on your Mercedes-Benz model, year, and equipment.

If a warning light remains illuminated or appears while driving, we recommend having your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mercedes-Benz service facility.

 ABS Light

The ABS warning light indicates that the Anti-Lock Brake System may have been deactivated due to a malfunction.

Other systems that may also be affected include:

  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
  • Brake Assist (BAS®)
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
  • Hill Start Assist

Your vehicle’s basic braking system may continue to function, but advanced safety features may not be available.

 Airbag Light

The airbag warning light indicates a possible malfunction with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).

A malfunction may prevent airbags or safety systems from operating properly in the event of a collision.

 Attention Assist

Mercedes-Benz ATTENTION ASSIST® monitors driving patterns and can alert the driver if it detects signs of fatigue or drowsiness.

This innovative safety feature helps encourage safer driving during long trips.

 Brake Light

A brake warning light may indicate:

  • The parking brake is engaged
  • Low brake fluid
  • A potential braking system issue

Driving with the parking brake engaged can damage braking components.

 Coolant Light

A red coolant warning light may indicate:

  • Low coolant level
  • Cooling system malfunction
  • Excessive engine temperature

If your engine temperature exceeds safe operating levels, continued driving may cause severe engine damage.

 Check Engine Light

The check engine light may indicate a concern with:

  • Engine management system
  • Fuel injection system
  • Ignition system
  • Exhaust system
  • Emissions system

Your vehicle may enter a reduced-power mode to help protect important components.

 ESC or ESP Light

The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) warning light indicates that the vehicle stability system may be inactive or has detected wheel slip.

This system helps maintain control during certain driving conditions.

 Gas Light

The fuel warning light indicates that your fuel level is low.

It may also indicate:

  • Fuel system pressure concerns
  • Incorrectly secured fuel cap
  • Possible fuel system leak

 Seat Belt Indicator

The seat belt indicator reminds the driver and front passenger to fasten their seat belts.

If driving above certain speeds without wearing seat belts, an audible warning may sound.

 Tire Pressure Light

The tire pressure warning light indicates that one or more tires may have insufficient air pressure.

Low tire pressure can lead to:

  • Increased tire wear
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Poor handling
  • Increased risk of tire damage

 Traction Off Light

This warning indicates that the Electronic Stability Control (ESC/ESP®) system has been switched off or may not be operating correctly.

Without this system, your vehicle may not provide the same level of stability assistance during slippery conditions.

 Brake Wear

This indicator means your brake pads and/or brake components may have reached their replacement limit.

Worn brakes can affect stopping performance and safety.

 Bulb

The bulb warning indicator means one or more exterior lights may not be operating properly.

A failed bulb can reduce visibility for you and other drivers.

 Steering Wheel

The steering warning light indicates a potential power steering system malfunction.

You may notice:

  • Increased steering effort
  • Difficulty maneuvering
  • Reduced steering assistance

 Glow Plug

Found primarily on diesel Mercedes-Benz models, the glow plug indicator shows that the engine preheating system is operating.

If the light remains illuminated after starting, there may be a system concern.

 DEF/AdBlue

Diesel Mercedes-Benz vehicles use Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue) as part of the emissions system.

A DEF warning indicates that the fluid level may be low or there may be an emissions system concern.
